Álvaro J. Caviedes is a contemporary artist whose practice combines photography, cyanotype, and experimental image-making to explore memory, place, and identity. ARTIST STATEMENT

New York City represents a monumental cultural, social, and avant-garde giant to me. Transiting through this city is an act of discovery that allows for the understanding of complex, abstract, and profound realities about society and the world. This selection of photographs reflects what it means for a dreamer, an immigrant, and a wanderer to traverse the urban landscape of New York, confronting art, architecture, the ruderal nature hidden in its corners, and its diverse cultures. The experience creates an almost hallucinatory imaginary, a specific state of mind that defines my connection to this place.This city is a space I desire to conquer and reach, but above all, a space I yearn to comprehend and engage with. This series captures my first steps in New York and my initial sensations.

TECHNICAL STATEMENT

The choice of analog double-exposure photography represents the wandering gaze that transits, feels, and speaks through lived experience. It captures the state of consciousness I find myself immersed in when I walk through New York City.

CYANOTYPE. HANDCRAFTED ALCHEMY

In the past year, I have integrated cyanotype into my workflow, seeking a more artisanal and experimental approach to fine art printing. Moving beyond conventional printing, cyanotype allows me to treat the photographic image as a tangible, living surface. This process has expanded the boundaries of my work, transforming the print itself into a site of exploration.

INNOVATION THROUGH HYBRIDIZATION

My process has evolved into a hybrid flow that bridges traditional darkroom techniques and modern digital intervention:

In-Camera Exposure: Initial layers of the image are captured through traditional
double-exposure techniques.
Digital-Analog Hybridization: I extend the "double exposure" logic to the scanning and printing process. By blending images during the scan and layering them within the cyanotype development, I create new visual universes that exist outside of a single moment in time.
Material Reconfiguration: I actively reuse negatives and textures, layering different scenarios to construct a unique cartography of memory and place.

This approach is a deliberate rejection of automated processes and machine learning. By keeping the creation of the image entirely within the realm of physical manipulation, photographic alchemy, manual printing, and creative layering, I ensure that the work retains its human instinct, its flaws, and its tactile connection to reality. This is not just about the final image; it is about the sanctity of the creative process and the preservation of a subjective, human gaze in an increasingly digital world.
